The family is of great antiquity, claiming descent from Reynolds, son of Grethferth, Danish King of Northumberland.
Grethferth and his two sons were driven from England about 944, and took shelter in Normandy, His descendant Fitreynolds, meaning son of Reynolds, returned to England with William the Conqueror. The family became established in Kent County, England, and Christopher Reynolds engaged in trade and commerce in London about 1550.
