92. Johann Nicholas GIBBS Jr. was born on 29 September 1733 in Wallruth, Baden, Germany.249 He signed a will on 19 May 1810 in Knox Co., TN. He died in 1817 at the age of 84 in Knox Co., TN.250 Will proven for name at place on date. Lived with his brother Abraham in Fredrickstown, MD. for awhile, then to Orange Co., NC. He sold Property in Orange Co., NC on 12 Oct 1791 then moved to Hawkins Co. (Knox), TN. He bought 450 acres in Hawkins Co. (Later to be Knox) on 6 Mar 1792. Arrived in America 1754 on the "Phoenix" (Philadelphia). See "Nicholas Gibbs and his Descendants", published by the Nicholas Gibbs historical Society, Knoxville, TN., copyright 1977. Bryon Sistler's "Index to Early TN. Wills and Administrations", page 135, has a Nicholas Gibbs, SR., 1817 wb-2-343, Knox Co., TN Mary EFLAND and Johann Nicholas GIBBS Jr. were married in 1764 in Orange Co., NC. There are two listings in U.S. and International Marriage Records 1560-1900 for Mary's wedding date. One says 1763, the other says 1764.

93. Mary EFLAND was born in 1739 in NJ.249 Gibbs Magazine has 1745. (U.S. and International Marriage Records 1560-1900 states that her birth year was 1739) (Her tombstone also confirms this year).


She died in 1833 at the age of 94 in Corryton, Knox Co., TN.249 She is buried with her husband in an old cemetery on Emory Road, near Harbison's Cross Roads, North Knoxville, Tennessee.
Probably was born in West Amwell Twp., Hunderdon Co., NJ.

Elizabeth GIBBS251 was born in 1765 in Orange Co., NC.252,253 She died in 1850 at the age of 85 in Lost Creek, Union Co., TN.252,253 She was buried in 1850 in Lost Creek Cemetery, Union Co., TN.253 Born (Burlington Liberty Road to the southwest of the present Burlington, NC). Buried at Lost Creek Cemetery, Union Co., TN. In 1850 she was living with her son George and Tabitha Rice Snodderly.

Mary GIBBS was born in 1766 in Orange Co., NC.252 She died on 8 August 1837 at the age of 71 in Orange Co., NC.254 Buried at Stoner's Churchyard, Alamance Co., NC. She was buried in August 1837 in Stoner's Church Cemetery, Alamance Co., NC. Buried at Old Stoner's Church Cemetery, Orange Co (now Alamance County), NC. Birth year and death date from Cemetery records published in the Alamance Genealogist, Sept 1984, page 14. It lists her as daughter of Nicholas Gibbs, wife of Henry Albright.

Sarah "Sally" GIBBS was born in 1767 in Orange Co., NC. Union County Heritage, Volume I has her birth date 1768 on page 314. She died in December 1826 at the age of 59 in Campbell Co., TN.255 She was buried in December 1826 in Lost Creek Cemetery, Union Co., TN.253

John GIBBS256,257 was born in 1769 in Orange Co., NC. He died on 13 August 1840 at the age of 71 in Anderson Co., TN. He was buried in August 1840 in Gibbs Cemetery 1, Andersonville, Anderson Co., TN. Buried near the mouth of Hinds' Creek in Anderson Co., TN. Grandfather of William Gibbs Mcadoo, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under Woodrow Wilson and later a senator from California.
"John Gibbs, Esq. departed this life in Anderson County, Tennessee after a protracted illness of 50 days. His disease was apoplexy. He died at 7 o'clock in the morning, on the 13th day of August (1840), in the 71st year of his age. For more than 30 years he filled the office of Justice of the Peace, was Entry Taker, etc., and once represented this county in the State Legislature. He was a man of strict urbanity of manner, honest and respected, a kind father, indulgent master, good neighbor and strict friend, lived respected and died lamented."
John Gibbs, in 1821, owned 1091 acres on the Clinch River, where the present city of Norris, Norris Dam and Lake now is in Anderson County, Tennessee.
He owned the land where Andersonville is located and transferred it to his son in law, John Whitson. Afterwards Gibbs and Whitson ran a mill and distillery about three miles northwest of Andersonville. John Whitson ran a store after that with a lpartner names Robert McKamey and later they moved to Clinton, the new county seat.

Jacob GIBBS was born in 1776 in Orange Co., NC. He died on 28 August 1852 at the age of 76 in Knox Co., TN. Will probated-OCT,1852,Knox CO., probably buried near Emory Road. Bryon Sistler's "Index to Early TN. Wills and Admin.", page 135 lists a Jacob Gibbs, 1852, wb-11-290, Knox.

General George Washington GIBBS was born on 3 October 1784 in Orange Co., NC. He died on 5 May 1870 at the age of 85 in Union City, Obion Co., TN. He was a lawyer and banker in Nashville, founded Union City, TN and is buried there. he was Adjutant General of Tennessee under Governor William Carroll. In a letter to the first William Gibbs McAdoo, in 1846, George indicated that this family had once been courtiers at the royal court when the Stuart dynasty held power in England and held great estates there. He stated that the family left England to save their heads when their king lost his. This would have been when Cromwell came to power and King Charles I was executed.

Daniel GIBBS was born on 20 May 1786 in Orange Co., NC. He died on 6 January 1852 at the age of 65 in Knox Co., TN. Bryon Sistler's "Index to Early TN. Wills and Admin.", page 135 lists a Daniel Gibbs, 1852 wb-11-194, Knox.

Nicholas GIBBS III was born in 1787 in Orange Co., NC. He died on 27 March 1814 at the age of 27 in Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Tohopeka, Tallapoosa Co., AL.249 He was buried in March 1814 in Fort Williams Cemetery, Talladega County, AL. The original site of Fort Williams is now under Lay Lake in Coosa County, Alabama. The headstones and the monument to the soldiers were moved to a new location 57 miles north of Horseshoe Bend Military Park. The cemetery has been badly vandalized. The site is NOT part of the Military Park and is on private property. Unfortunately, the cemetery cannot be maintained by the Military Park Rangers as they have no jurisdiction over the site. Location of the Cemetery: The Cemetery is near the town of Sylacuaga, Ala., about 13.2 miles off of U.S. Highway 280, approximately 57 miles North of Horseshoe Bend Military Park. The Site is marked on Alabama Maps as "Indian War of 1812 Cemetery". He served in the War of 1812 as a 2nd Lt. Vol 3 Southern States - pension Roll- 1835 lists: Capt. Nicholas Gibbs killed Mar 27, 1814 Battle of Tohopeka (Horseshoe Bend), Ala., Capt. under Col. Samuel Bunch's Mtd. Regt. Col. John Williams' 39th Regt. - U.S. Infantry - Jan 10, 1814. This battle was fought 55 miles south of Fort Strotler in lower Alabama against the Creek Indians. Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson of Tn. Militia, with Maj. Lemuel P. Montgomery, Capt. Nicholas Gibbs and Sam Houston, with 2000 soldiers sought to bring the Creek Indians under control. Capt. Gibbs was killed as he was making a charge. The 1806 tax for Knox Co., Tn shows Nicholas Gibbs, Jr. with 160 acres of land. The 1830 census shows Rachel living next door to Danl. Gibbs and Jas. Crippen. Her two sons were 15-20 years of age. Bryon Sistler's "Index to Early TN. Wills and Admin." lists a Nicholas Gibbs, Jr. 1814, wb-2-120, Knox. See page 135. Nicholas is supposedly buried at Horseshoe Bend. See page 147-48, UCHS Pathways, Dec. 1992 for the Payroll list of Captain Gibbs Company, East TN Militia, War of 1812. Nicholas had sold the home place in NC in 1791. It was about 6 miles from Burlington, NC on Liberty Road.

Barbara GIBBS was born on 18 April 1789 in Orange Co., NC. She died in July 1866 at the age of 77 in Rhea Co., TN.252,259 She was buried in July 1866 in Beriah Frazier Family Cemetery, Dayton, TN.259
